Parramatta is the centre of Greater Sydney's west, about twenty-three kilometres from the Sydney CBD on the Parramatta River. Often called Sydney's second CBD, it is home to government offices, major employers, Western Sydney University campuses and Westmead Hospital nearby.
Transport options are strong. Parramatta station is served by several Sydney Trains lines, the Parramatta Light Rail links the city centre with Westmead and Carlingford, and RiverCat ferries run down the river to Circular Quay. The Sydney Metro West line, now under construction, is planned to add a fast connection to the CBD.
The lifestyle has changed a lot in recent years. Church Street's Eat Street dining precinct, Westfield Parramatta, the riverside walks and Parramatta Park all sit close together, while CommBank Stadium hosts football and other events.
New developments are mainly high-rise and mid-rise apartment towers in and around the city centre, with many offering views, retail on the ground floor and resident facilities such as gyms and pools.
Parramatta suits young professionals, students and first home buyers who want city-style living with jobs, study, transport and entertainment close by, at a central point of greater Sydney.
